Urban Garden

The Junior League of Louisville Urban Garden Committee has been hard at work getting their hands dirty at League gardens: Home of The Innocents, Volunteers of America, and The Family Scholar House. Two of these locations are brand new gardens for the League!

Home of the Innocents Garden

At Home of The Innocents , we are continuing our work with the children by teaching them during our volunteer shifts about how to cook with herbs and about the vitamins they get from the vegetables they planted in their garden. The children have already harvested lettuce, onions and carrots at this location and released ladybugs which are beneficial for controlling pests in the garden.

Volunteers of America Garden

On Saturday, May 12 at Volunteers of America, 1436 South Shelby Street the Urban Garden Committee along with the residents of VOA started a brand new garden ! Volunteers of America has a wonderful site next to their location that is flat with plenty of sunshine perfect for a raised bed garden. They already have three existing raised beds and the Urban Garden Committee added three more. These new raised beds were purchased from 15Thousand Farmers and are made of cedar. We were able to have the residents of VOA help us put these raised beds together so they know in the future how easy it is garden in a raised bed. We planted tomato, squash, cucumber, melons, yellow and red peppers, and various herbs. We even had the children help test the soil in the existing raised beds to see if they were fine before we planted in them. Volunteers of America will use these fresh vegetables and herbs when cooking for their residents. We will also partner with their chef for cooking demonstrations.

Family Scholar House Garden

Another new garden site for the Urban Garden Committee is with the Family Scholar House. We have two gardens: Rooftop Garden at the Early Learning Center on University of Louisville ’s campus , 409 Reg Smith Circle and a Children’s Garden located at 2301 Bradley Avenue with raised beds. We are learning with the Rooftop Garden a variety of ways to garden on a roof versus the ground. At both these locations we are partnering with the organization to assist in cooking classes with the residents.
